It can be hard to visualize what size the art on your wall should be. I had a hard time purchasing my first 16×20 family portrait. It sounded so big. Why? Because I grew up with portrait packages where the BIG picture was an 8×10. I am happy to say that our smallest family image is now a 20×30 my largest is a 30×40. Today, I view custom photography as art not just a picture. I want to be able to see and enjoy the portrait properly sized for the space where the portrait is hung. I am sharing this example to show the scale of a portrait on the wall in relation to a common spot in our homes, above the couch. You might notice that the crop on the portraits are different. Images are created in the camera to print at 4×6, 8×12, 16×24 and 20×30 – these are sizes that require no cropping to the original file size. All other sized prints involve a crop to the original file size. 8×10 and 16×20’s, two very common sizes which involve cropping 2 and 4 inches respectively from an image. Hopefully, the next time that you purchase beautiful portraits this guide will help you to choose the appropriate size for the your home.
